About the Comprehensive Reverse Shoulder
The Zimmer Biomet product is a shoulder replacement device that helps restore arm movement after it is surgically implanted. In particular, it was used in patients with a failed shoulder joint replacement and arthropathy (severe shoulder arthritis) following a rotator cuff tear. There are approximately three thousand devices at issue. It is unknown how many of them were installed in patients.
The FDA Recall
The product at issue is the Comprehensive Reverse Shoulder System Humeral Tray Model 115340. It includes all lots with part number 115340. The 3662 devices were manufactured from August 25, 2008 to September 27, 2011. The devices were distributed from October 2008 to September 2015.
The FDA issued a Class I recall, the most serious type, in February 2017. Use of the device may cause serious injury or death. The recall was initially sent to affected medical customers in a letter in December 2016.
