Over eight reports of infant deaths have been linked to the Boppy Company of Golden, Colorado, leading to over 3.3 million units recalled by Boppy. The eight deaths were reportedly caused by suffocation after the infant was placed on either the back, side, or stomach on the lounger, eventually leading to suffocation. Later – the infants were found either on their sides or stomachs.
This isn’t the first time an improperly designed infant pillow has lead to deaths. Retail giants ended all sales of reclined infant sleepers as the Consumer Product and Safety Commission (CPSC) study finally linked over 73 infant deaths to the use of infant sleeper recliners.

What products were affected by the recall?
Three types of Boppy infant pillows are affected by the recall. These were sold across multiple outlets online and within stores. If you or a family member suffered the death of an infant and used any of these products don’t hesitate to contact our attorneys today at 866-690-2848.
The following Boppy products have been recalled by the CPSC as of September 23, 2021:
- Boppy Original Newborn Loungers
- Boppy Preferred Newborn Loungers
- Pottery Barn Kids Boppy Newborn Loungers
Suffocation by these products may not always be clear when an infant has passed away. Frequently deaths caused by infant sleepers are classified as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (or SIDS), and doctors may not immediately know it was caused by a product defect.
Contacting McEldrew Young Purtell & Merritt for a free consultation can help you understand whether you and your family deserve compensation for your suffering.
What is causing Boppy infant loungers to suffocate infants?
As infants have not yet developed enough strength to turn themselves over or lift their heads, it is unfortunately too common for defective products to put a newborn in a situation where they roll into a position that obstructs breathing or roll entirely off the lounger onto another surface that can cause suffocation such as a comforter or an adult-sized pillow.
So far, eight infant deaths have been attributed to the use of the Boppy brand infant loungers and these occurred between December 2015 and June 2020.
How do I know whether I have a Boppy brand infant lounger?
It’s not often that parents know the brand of every pillow they buy for their children. Be sure to check the UPC / Barcode of the tag on the pillow in order to determine whether you have a recalled product.

Where were Boppy infant loungers sold?
With over 3.3 million products being recalled, Boppy infant loungers were sold nationwide not only at boutique newborn stores but also across major chains such as Target, Pottery Barn, Walmart, and online at Amazon.com.
These were available for sale between January 2004 and September 2021 so the probability of these products causing infant deaths beyond the five years of confirmed cases may continue to rise.
