9 Outrageous, Death Defying Highway Truck Accidents

Big Rigs, Tractor Trailers and Semis are known for being the Giants of the Highway. These monstrous vehicles are capable of incredible destruction if driven improperly or overcome by uncontrollable forces of nature. Here we share some of the most dangerous, gravity defying trucking accidents that left bystanders shocked and unbelievably, left the truck drivers unscathed.

A tow-truck driver narrowly escaped a 200 foot fall with just seconds to spare after his cargo truck tumbled down the side of an icy cliff.

Interestingly, the tow truck was tasked with rescuing the second truck, after it became stuck on the perilous Norwegian roadways. On its way to safety, the tow truck slid out of control causing both vehicles crash through the guard rail, plummeting to the ground.

Chinese motorist Yu Lin, from Nanyang, managed to survive after his vehicle spun out of control, plummeting to the ground before he was saved by passing truck.  By sheer chance his vehicle became wedged between the truck and steep bank.

Lin says, “I could feel myself falling and it all seemed to be happening in slow motion like a movie. I thought to myself ‘That’s it, you’re going to die…Then all of a sudden there was a bump and I stopped in midair as if I’d been caught by a giant hand.”

Onlookers were amazed by this freak accident with a miraculous ending.

A truck carrying materials for Madonna’s ongoing “MDNA” tour over-turned in Sweden on Tuesday July 3, 2012, blocking parts of a highway and injuring at least one person, the AP reports.

The accident occurred on the way to Goteborg in the southwestern region of the country. Police don’t know what caused the truck to flip over, and are unsure if the accident will affect Madonna’s tour schedule. Surely the infamously demanding Queen of Pop wasn’t happy about this latest misstep.

August 2011, a sanitation worker lost control of a garbage truck and crashed through the third floor of a maintenance facility in Manhattan, NY.  Miraculously, the truck driver escaped with minor injuries.

To get the truck out of the perilous position, workers used a crane to hoist the front end while the rear was pulled, inch by inch, back into the building.

A driver survived this “cliffhanger” when the breaks on his overloaded truck failed, nearly sending the vehicle plummeting down a 400 foot cliff.  The speeding truck was loaded with 40 tons of coal and going too fast to make a turn in Qingzhen, south-west China. Precariously suspended over this deadly drop, the driver was terrified to exit. Bystanders ultimately coaxed him out of the cab and onto safe ground.

January, 2012 a Target semi-truck hit a patch of ice while driving on Interstate 94 in Monticello, Minnesota, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and on to an icy pond. Onlookers say the truck was suspended on the ice for a moment before crashing through into the water. The driver managed to escape with minor injuries.

A bizarre truck accident in Houston, Texas left commuters stuck in traffic for hours after the back of a dump truck began “rising on its own.” Soon the escalating bed of the truck hit this highway sign, separating it from the cab. Sources speculate that the truck’s hydraulics malfunctioned, causing the back of the truck to rise. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

A truck driver in Chengdu, China was lucky to survive after he lost control of his vehicle while making a tight turn. The accident left the cab of his truck dangerously balanced on the edge of an overpass, suspended over an intimating 100 foot drop.

July, 2012 a Miami UPS truck crashed through a pedestrian rail, sailing through the air and into the Biscayne Bay. The truck ultimately landed 100 ft. from the shore. Onlookers were shocked to see a crumbled UPS truck sitting in the middle of the Bay.

Local authorities say that the accident occurred after the truck hit a tree, causing the roof to peel off and the gas pedal to get stuck.

It is unclear whether or not the driver was in the vehicle when it crashed, but amazingly he survived without injury.

WSVN reports that divers attached tow truck lines to remove the vehicle from the water.
